Lately, I've seen some very responsible clients who want to improve on their dog's recall. As part of my 1:1 and Puppy Training Programmes, I always suggest finding somewhere suitable to practice. Wherever you train your dog to come when called is where their recall will be most reliable. The more varied the locations, the more confident and consistent your dog will be across different environments.
That’s why it makes sense to rotate your training across multiple spots — I recommend a minimum of five. This gives your dog the chance to generalise the behaviour, not just perform it in one familiar place.
Here are my top suggestions for secure, off-lead spaces near Teddington where you can safely practise recall and build reliability over time:
-
Type: Large park, bordered by the River Thames and a main road (fenced).
Escape Artist Proof? ❌ Not fully secure, but spacious enough to find a quiet patch.
Good to Know: Excellent parking. Be cautious if your dog swims — the Thames flows fast here.
-
Type: Small, wooded, fenced-off area within Bushy Park.
Escape Artist Proof? ❌ No — large gaps between horizontal fence rails.
Good to Know: Great for avoiding deer-chasing worries, but limited space.
-
Type: Medium to large public park, fenced and bordered by a railway line.
Escape Artist Proof? ❌ Not entirely — there’s a bridle path exit to Hanworth. Dogs would need to know the park or be panicked to find it.
Good to Know: Public fencing may be compromised in places.
-
Type: Very small field off Heathfield Recreation Ground.
Escape Artist Proof? ❌ No — large holes in the far fence. Fine for recall practice.
Good to Know: Informal and quiet, but not secure.
-
Type: Small fenced field near Old Deer Park Tennis, behind Pools on the Park.
Escape Artist Proof? ⚠️ Possibly — do a perimeter check before use.
Good to Know: Paid parking nearby. If someone’s using the field, ask before entering.
-
Type: Secure fenced paddocks (private hire).
Escape Artist Proof? ✅ Yes — but still worth a perimeter check.
Good to Know: On-site parking. Fowl, goats, and horses present. Call ahead to book.
-
Type: Secure fenced paddock in countryside setting.
Escape Artist Proof? ✅ Yes — unless your dog can clear a 5-bar gate.
Good to Know: Access via public footpath. Lovely riverside walks nearby. Call owner for pricing and booking.
-
Type: Secure fenced fields (private hire).
Escape Artist Proof? ✅ Yes — perimeter walk recommended.
Good to Know: On-site parking. Site is stewarded — someone is available to assist. Call to book.
